About The Foster Memorial

The Foster Memorial itself is worthy of the visit even with out the music. This wonderful unique treasure of byzantine design is located approx 4 km north of Uxbridge on Durham 1. The solid copper roof has leaded stained glass windows. The doors are constructed of solid brass again with stained glass windows. The floor and ceiling are covered with marble mosaics with inlaid symbols There is a marble alter and the columns supporting the great arches are also marble with devon stone capitals. The structure itself is octagon in shape and built of Indiana limestone with a great central dome.

Foster was born July 24th, 1825, in Lambton Mills but was raised in the former Scott Township (now part of Uxbridge) where the family moved after his mothers passing where his father ran the Hotel in the Hamlet of Leaskdale. Later in life he would become a butcher in cabbage town, (Toronto) and serve as the Mayor of Toronto from 1925 to 1927 in addition to being elected as an MP.

Victoria Day Weekend - Opening Up The Summer Retreat

While many of us may have already enjoyed some time up at our summer hideaways Victoria Day Weekend has a long standing tradition of being the week end Canadians "open up" the cottage.

With the OPP out in full force on the roads and waterways this Victoria Day Weekend here in Ontario, during Canada Road Safety Week, we also need to remember boating safety and that all boat operators have completed the now mandatory Pleasure Craft Operator Card, one of the proofs of competency.

Canada Road Safety Week - The campaign which began on May 14 and will on through the Victoria Day long weekend before coming to an end on May 21, 2012.

As part of this weeks (May 14th to May 21st 2012) Canada Road Safety Week the OPP will be targeting distracted drivers.

While most believe this only applies to using hand held communications devices it covers a much broader spectrum of distractions. Activities such as: adjusting the radio, watching an entertainment monitor, drinking or eating are just some of the activities that can land you in hot water.

"The OPP fully supports this national road safety campaign which targets aggressive driving behaviours and restraint non-compliance," said OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis. "The goal of this campaign is in keeping with our own Provincial Traffic Safety Program which aims to reduce injuries and deaths on our highways through education and aggressive enforcement action," added Lewis.

2012-05 Mid Month - Uxbridge Real Estate - Buyers Activity Report

May 2012

Statistics from one listing web site indicate the number of listings viewed to date is approaching the number viewed in May of 2011 for the entire month if activity continues at the current rate the number of listings viewed will almost double that of last May.

There are currently 149 (up from 124 last month at this time) properties for sale in Uxbridge and it's Hamlets of Coppins Corners, Goodwood, Leaskdale, Sandford, Udora, and Zephyr, ranging in price from $175,000 to $3,900,000 on the national realtor.ca web site.

In looking at the chart below you will notice the average value of homes viewed is rising at an even pace for the year and the year to date average is higher than the average for all of last year. This is not necessarily an indicator that values are Rising ..... it is simply a reflection of the values of properties that are currently being viewed. Watch for the mid month sales report to see how sales values are shaping up.

The Two graphs below represent the average and median price range of homes that potential buyers are looking at on one of my web sites.

About The LMMSO

"The Lucy Maud Montgomery Society of Ontario is a not-for-profit organization incorporated within the Province of Ontario. The purpose of the Society is to bring together people who share an interest in the heritage of Lucy Maud Montgomery, particularly as it relates to her life in Leaskdale. The Society operates the Leaskdale Manse National Historic Site, a museum which is open to the public. It owns the Historic Leaskdale Church (the former St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church where Ewan Macdonald was the minister from 1910 to 1926) and uses it in conjunction with the Manse to showcase the life of Montgomery in Leaskdale."

Uxbridge History and Heritage

The Historical plaque erected on the front lawn of the Manse property reads as follows:

"LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY"

"In this house the author of "Anne of Green Gables" lived for fifteen years, and here wrote eleven of her twenty-two novels, including "Anne of the Island" (1915) and "Anne's House of Dreams" (1916). Born in 1874 at Clifton, Prince Edward Island, she was educated at Charlottetown and Halifax. From 1898 to 1911, she lived at Cavendish, P.E.I., and there began her career as a novelist. In 1911 she married the Rev. Ewan Macdonald, a Presbyterian minister, and came with him to Leaskdale. They moved in 1926 to Norval, and nine years later to Toronto, where she died in 1942. Mrs. Macdonald was awarded the O.B.E. by King George V in 1935"

 The Average Selling Price for homes in the GTA $517,556 ..... UP 8.5% over the same period last year 

Over all sales numbers ..... UP 18% over the same period last year with 10,350 existing home sales in April 2012

Walking With My Grandson And The Okami Kai Team In The MS Walk

Sometimes life throws us a curve ball

My Brother was diagnosed with MS a few years ago and was recently hospitalized when he lost all feeling from the waist down. This is not the first curve ball life has pitched his way yet while visiting him in the hospital I could not get over how cheerful he was.  With friends and relatives suffering from this debilitating disease when My grandson asked if I would walk with him I simply said yes.

Can you imagine ...

• walking up one morning and not be able to walk
• that you may suddenly have impaired vision
• that your memory will fail you for no apparent reason
• symptoms of MS are many and vary for everyone

It's estimated that approximately 55,000-75,000 men and women in Canada have the disease, and every day about three more people are diagnosed.

... a future without MS

I've registered for the MS Walk because I want to do something for everyone who lives with multiple sclerosis. The MS Society is the only national voluntary organization in Canada that supports both MS research and services.

The MS Walk has been a critical part of the MS Society's fundraising efforts for over 20 years. Proceeds from this event and others like it provide support and services to help those living with this disease, their families and caregivers. They also fund research with three primary goals: to find a cause and cure for MS, repair nervous system damage caused by MS and stop MS attacks.
